some things endure

Over at Limping Towards the Sunrise some of us have been remembering the fashions of the early ’90s. All that talk of pink shirts and floral trousers (not on me, you understand) brought back other memories, and I found myself reaching for John Michael Talbot’s Lover and the Beloved. I played this CD endlessly when I first found it (it comes post Taize, and pre-Tavener, if you’re wondering). I love it, though it may seem bizarre. I find it provoking & disturbing, for all that it seems to drip of honey at first. Typical mysticism, in fact — holding out the promise, and reminding you of how far you are from it.
I’m struggling to find a good recording on-line, but there’s a bit for you here.

Come my love,
pass through my will
as through a window
Shine on my life
as on a meadow
I, like the grass, to be consumed
by the rays of the sun
on a late summer’s morning

to market, to market

Distraction in morning prayer today went something like this:

  • it’s sunny
  • I’m stressed
  • what if it rains tomorrow?
  • I will be wet and miserable and more stressed
  • day off today??

After much soul searching and diary consulting, I decided that today would indeed be my day off. Objective: to go to Tesco’s to buy fruit, vegetables, tofu and cat treats.

But I couldn’t bear the thought of another day wasted on the ferry, back and forth to Glasgow. So Tesco’s in Oban then. Via Glencoe. Of course.

daily prayer

While working on a service for Sunday evening in Rothesay, I came across a clever feed for the daily office from the Church of England. I have added Daily Prayer links in the side bar that will take you to morning or evening prayer each day.

These links are on British time, though if you are reading from elsewhere the main ‘Daily Prayer’ link in the copyright information will tell you what you need to do.

You will find similar links on the websites for St Paul’s and Holy Trinity.

Happy praying.

Addendum:  Molly has just discovered the ribbons on my new Daily Prayer book.  At last she sees the point of the daily office.  But she is horrified at the thought that such fun could be lost on line.

a little thing

hazel

After 15 years of dipping in and out of Mother Julian’s Revelations, I have finally seen a hazelnut. I know, I know — I must have seen them before. But I didn’t know they were hazelnuts, since I didn’t recognize the tree. So I have never known how luminous, how very soft, how lovely they are.

And so much more world like in their fragility. Julian must have had a green nut in mind, existing because it is loved.

It was at this time that our Lord showed me spiritually how intimately he loves us. I saw that he is everything that we know to be good and helpful. In his love he clothes us, enfolds us and embraces us; that tender love completely surrounds us, never to leave us As I saw it he is everything that is good.

And he showed me more, a little thing, the size of a hazelnut, on the palm of my hand, round like a ball. I looked at it thoughtfully and wondered, ‘What is this?’ And the answer came, ‘It is all that is made.’ I marvelled that it continued to exist and did not suddenly disintegrate; it was so small. And again my mind supplied the answer, ‘it exists, both now and for ever, because God loves it.’ In short, everything owes its existence to the love of God.
