all is revealed

A friend of mine talks about ‘the angel of the church’* — the one that expresses the basic spirit of the place, on good days and bad.  This friend is better at spotting angels than I am — especially if they come in unexpected form.

Well, today, the angel of St Mary’s finally appeared.

It seems she’s a parrot.

I should have realised sooner, I suspect.

What a good day.

*(my friend admits to stealing the idea from other sources, but I suspect our private conversations about it spin off in direction the original authors never intended)

parrot blue

I promise this wasn’t a set-up.  Someone had gone home with a blue book yesterday (an accident, as it happens, but a practice much to be recommended) and it came back to us at Craft Group — right into the midst of our preparations for Mothering Sunday.

Today, the Craft Group set aside their knitting and needle point and teddy-bear stitching to make parrot masks.

And if you want to know why we need parrot masks for Mothering Sunday, you shall just have to come and see.

More photos of our fine feathered friends are below the fold. Continue reading “parrot blue”

calling all novelists

I just stumbled across the web page for a church in Cambridge.

For those of you who might one day write  the churchy-novel the pisky church so desperately needs (yes, Elizabeth, I mean you), please follow the link for all the inspiration you will ever need in the choosing of names.  In truth, I suppose they wouldn’t do for a pisky novel (too English) — but such a splendid coincidence of names needs to be shared and celebrated widely.

everyday blessings #22

A field-trip to Hobbycraft to get supplies for the Candle-making Workshop.
Laughter, lunch, and finding a new route home.

So much more fun than the things I had thought I’d be doing today, and lucky that I realised that there was no day next week for getting it sorted.

If you live near enough:

Candlemas at St Mary’s

Friday, 29 January.  7.30 pm.   Quiz night in aid of Haiti.  £5 per ticket.  Teams of five (children come free and aren’t counted in the ‘five’).  Please comment or email me to book tickets.

Saturday, 30 January.  10 am – 1 pm.  Candle decorating workshop for all ages.  Kid’s candle making, glass painting for votive holders (all ages), wire beading (teens & adults).  £2 donation requested to help cover costs.  Any profit will go towards the Haiti appeal.

Sunday, 31 January.  10.30 am.  All Age Worship for Candlemas with blessing of the candles.

On Saturday, each person will be invited to make a candle for themselves, and a candle to give away.

On Sunday, the candles will be offered as we pray for the people we will give them to.  After communion the candles will be blessed, and we will ‘go forth’ with the candles — bearing ‘a light to lighten the nations’ (and an excuse to call round at a friend’s).
